In this interactive workshop, you will explore Soundpainting, the live composing language originated by Walter Thompson for multidisciplinary ensembles. Soundpainting is easy to learn, works across music styles and disciplines, and creates community through the experience. In addition to the large group activities, you'll also form smaller groups and develop Soundpaintings to share. Compose in real time while getting to know your fellow artists!

In this workshop, you will explore Alvin Lucier's Memory Space (1970), which asks artists to recreate found sound environments. Working in collaboration with your fellow artists, you'll develop and document a 5-minute piece turning found sound into a graphic score, and ultimately performing it as a group. Get to know the sound environment in and around the New School and other artists from across the College while creating exciting, experimental work.

Buster Williams has played with everyone – from Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Art Blakey, and so on. Join Buster in intimate conversation and musical collaboration with living greats, such as – Herbie Hancock, Benny Golson, Christian McBride and others in the film that the London Jazz Times calls “one of the finest documentaries we’ve seen”.

In this hour-long workshop, you will explore art-makers and producers expanding the performing arts through artistic initiatives that transcend conventional presenting forms. This workshop includes exploration of selected, groundbreaking artists, followed by a discussion and a breakout session in which you and your fellow participants will devise your own 'beyond the stage' models.

FAQs for Orientation

Do I need to register for Orientation?

Yes! Registration is open for both incoming students and their parents and family members. Please register here.

 

Additional individual sessions may also require registration. Be sure to read the schedule in detail and keep an eye on your New School email account for more information. 


I'm unable to attend some of the sessions. Will recordings be available afterwards?

All of the College of Performing Arts orientation sessions will take place in-person. There will not be recordings available afterwards. 

What is the difference between university-wide events, college-specific events, and program-specific events?

We're so glad you asked! At The New School, you're not just a part of your own individual college. You have all the resources of the entire university at your fingertips. 


When reviewing the schedule, you'll see events that pertain to your particular program of study to help you prepare for your academic experience. You'll also see events on getting involved, campus resources, and social activities that are open to all students regardless of your college or major. You're encouraged to attend as much as possible (note: some program-specific sessions are mandatory. Monitor your New School email closely for details). 


The interdisciplinary nature of The New School is one of our strengths, and we're so glad you'll be a part of this multi-faceted community.
