Valencia James is a Barbadian freelance performer, maker and researcher interested in the intersection between dance, theatre, technology and activism. She believes in the power of the arts to inspire change. In 2013 Valencia co-founded the AI_am project, which explores the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence in dance. The project has been presented at several international forums such as the 2015 International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Buenos Aires, ISEA 2015 in Vancouver, TEDxBudapest and TEDxGoteborg. Their first evening-length work premiered in Budapest and Gothenburg in 2017.
Valencia also creates solo works which explore stereotypes and post-colonial narratives. She has performed extensively in Hungary, Romania, Poland, France, Israel, Sweden, Argentina, and Canada. After a decade in Hungary, she is now based in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2020, Valencia was invited to moderate a panel on AI, art and social justice at SIGGRAPH and is a Rapid Response for a Better Digital Future Fellow at Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism.

This fall, DT is partnering on Cloud Salon curation with black beyond, a radical platform for artists and activists to speculate alternate realities for Blackness. black beyond interrogates understandings of Black subjectivity outside the limitations imposed on Blackness by the racist imaginary through: Afropessimism, Afronowism, Afrofuturism, Black feminist theory, and critical race studies.

This talk will begin with a 20-minute presentation by Valencia James, followed by a 40-minute conversation with participants, moderated by members of black beyond.
