Building on the work of the third Centering Justice Symposium: Meeting the Moment — Energy, Resilience and Our Collective Power, the Tishman Environment and Design Center will co-host a series of topical webinars that take an in-depth look at critical issues facing climate and environmental justice communities today. These sessions will bring together members of the Centering Justice Community of Practice, allied academics and community partners to explore how communities, in partnerships with trusted academic partners, are leading the way toward a more healthy, just, and liveable future.Â

Led by Mathy Stanislaus, Director of The Environmental Collaboratory (TEC) at Drexel University, this webinar is part of TEC’s sustained effort to strengthen community-level preparedness for increasingly severe weather. Expanding on their foundational report, the discussion will explore the development of transparent, community-centered systems that are proactive, equitable, and scalable — not only preparing communities for severe weather, but empowering reciprocal support networks with neighboring communities.Â

Mathy (pronounced Matty or Ma-thee) Stanislaus, Esq., serves as Vice-Provost and Executive Director of The Environmental Collaboratory at Drexel University. Leveraging the expertise of an R1 research university and the energy of its students, the Collaboratory advances co-funded, community-led climate justice initiatives in partnership with local organizations. The Collaboratory supports community partners in identifying climate priorities, conducting data analysis, and developing policy and implementation recommendations, while advancing applied research to support durable solutions.
Before joining Drexel, Mathy led the establishment of multi-stakeholder platforms advancing climate action, circular economy strategies, and human rights at the World Economic Forum. Nominated by President Barack Obama, Mathy served for eight years as the longest-serving Senate-confirmed Assistant Administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Land and Emergency Management. Â
An environmental lawyer and chemical engineer with more than twenty years of leadership experience, Mathy is admitted to the bar in New York and New Jersey. He earned his J.D., specializing in environmental law, from Chicago-Kent College of Law and his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from The City College of New York.
Over the past two years, The Environmental Collaboratory (TEC) at Drexel University has consulted with over 300 stakeholders allowed TEC to identify persistent gaps in capacity, coordination, and resource alignment for severe weather preparedness. The collected knowledge was supplemented with extensive desktop research and synthesis of existing policy, infrastructure, and risk literature and consolidated into a foundational report.
TEC’s long-term vision with this work is to establish a sustainable community of communities for extreme weather preparedness that strengthens resilience both within and across localities facing increasingly severe weather. TEC is working to ensure that communities are better equipped to withstand their unique severe weather risks and vulnerabilities, particularly those shaped by inequities in health, infrastructure, environmental conditions, and access to resources. Investment in this work supports the development of transparent, community-centered systems that are proactive, equitable, and scalable, not only preparing communities for inevitable severe weather events, but also empowering them to support neighboring communities and be supported in return.Â
