ONLINE | Cave Canem New Works: Black Womanhood and Girlhood Awakenings

Poets Naomi Extra (Ratchet Supreme), Allison Joseph (Lexicon), and Simone Savannah (Uses of My Body) read from recent collections exploring common themes of racism and misogyny, sexuality, refusing expectation, intimacy, and celebrations of self. In partnership with The New School Creative Writing Program.

Allison Joseph lives, writes, and teaches in Carbondale, Illinois, where she is on the faculty at Southern Illinois University. Her poetry collection, Confessions of a Barefaced Woman (Red Hen Press) was a finalist for the NAACP Image Award in Poetry and won the Feathered Quill Book Award. Her newest books include Lexicon (Red Hen Press), The Last Human Heart (Diode Editions), Smart Pretender (Finishing Line Press), and Corporal Muse (Sibling Rivalry Press). Her chapbooks Any Proper Weave (Kelsay Books) and Professional Happiness (Backbone Press) will appear in 2021. She is the widow of the much-missed poet, editor, and writer Jon Tribble.

Simone Savannah is the author of Uses of My Body (Barrow Street, 2020) and Like Kansas (Big Lucks, 2018). She earned her M.Ed and B.A. from Ohio University. She holds a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Kansas. She was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio.

Naomi Extra is a freelance writer, poet, and doctoral candidate in American Studies at Rutgers University-Newark. In both her creative and scholarly work, she explores the themes of agency and pleasure in the lives of black women and girls. Naomi has been awarded fellowships by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Cave Canem, Crescendo Literary, the African American Intellectual History Society, and Imagining America. Her writing has appeared in Zora, The Lily, Lit Hub, Boston Review, Glamour, and elsewhere. She is the winner of the 2019 BOAAT Chapbook Prize.

About the Creative Writing Program

The New School offered the first academic creative writing workshop in 1931 and pioneered a new philosophy of education. The idea: students would make their own lives and their own stories part of their education. Today, The New School continues to celebrate and cultivate daring and diverse new voices through its Creative Writing program. The value of this approach is reflected in the publications and achievements of our MFA Creative Writing graduates and faculty.
