BORDER AS METHOD is a virtual, public-facing event series featuring artists, curators, activists, and scholars across the world focused on the making and unmaking of art under conditions of exile or forced migration, or from areas where travel is prohibited or difficult. Hosted by faculty from the Department of the Arts at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, The New School. All events are free and open to the public, but prior registration is required.
This series explores the border as a mode of knowledge, practice, and imagination. We will consider the border not only as a geographical boundary between nations, but also as conditions of exclusion and inclusion through which politics is exercised. Expanding upon the border as infrastructure and as media, we will investigate the ways in which boundaries shift in scale and discipline by analyzing architecture, institutions, and social systems. We will explore how the border’s effects radiate beyond its physical origin, influencing a range of technologies, protocols, ideologies, and fantasies. What additional models of thought--whether of discourse, assemblage, intensity--can help us understand the work of borders, their effects of extraction, division, and control under globalization and racial capitalism?
