During the presidential campaign, Joe Biden set out an ambitious immigration agenda, pledging to end many of the Trump Administration’s brutal policies. He would stop building the wall, restore refugee admissions, rebuild the asylum system, cancel rules that harmed low-income migrants, reduce detention of immigrants and rein in the Border Patrol. His record so far has been quite mixed: wall construction has stopped but the COVID regulations remain in place; some asylum rules have been changed but the huge backlog of cases remains; Haitian asylum seekers coming from South America states have been summarily returned to Haiti; cooperation with Mexico and corrupt regimes in Central America to keep migrants from reaching the US continues; tens of thousands of Afghani refugees are stuck on military bases and elsewhere outside the US awaiting processing.
A panel of experts will evaluate these developments, prospects for the future and the likelihood of federal legislation.

Alexandra Délano Alonso is Associate Professor and Chair of Global Studies at The New School and the current holder of the Eugene M. Lang Professorship for Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring. Her research focuses on diaspora policies, the transnational relationships between states and migrants, migration in the Central America-Mexico-US corridor, sanctuary, and the politics of memory in relation to borders, violence and migration. Délano Alonso's work is driven by a concern with the inequalities underlying forced migration, the structures that lead to the marginalization of undocumented migrants in the public sphere, and the practices of resistance and solidarity focused on migrants' access to rights, from a transnational perspective.
Délano Alonso's current research focuses on transformative practices of solidarity across the Central America-Mexico-US migration corridor.
Lee Gelernt is a lawyer at the ACLU’s national office in New York. He is widely recognized as one of the country’s leading public interest lawyers and has argued dozens of important civil rights cases during his career, including in the U.S. Supreme Court and virtually every federal court of appeals in the country. He has also testified as a legal expert before both houses of Congress. His recent work is featured in the documentary “The Fight.” In addition to his work at the ACLU, he is an adjunct professor at Columbia Law School, and for several years was a visiting professor at Yale Law School.
During the past four years, he has argued some of the country’s highest profile cases, including a national class-action challenge to the Trump administration’s unprecedented practice of separating immigrant families at the border.
Donald M. Kerwin, Jr. has directed the Center for Migration Studies of New York (CMS) since September 2011. He previously worked for the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) between 1992 and 2008, serving as its Executive Director (ED) for 15 years and its interim ED for six months in late 2012 and early 2013. Upon his arrival at CLINIC in 1992, Mr. Kerwin coordinated CLINIC’s political asylum project for Haitians. CLINIC, a subsidiary of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), is a public interest legal corporation that supports a national network of several hundred charitable legal programs for immigrants. Between 2008 and 2011, Mr. Kerwin served as Vice-President for Programs at the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), where he wrote on immigration, labor standards, and refugee policy issues.
Mr. Kerwin writes and speaks extensively on immigration policy, refugee protection, access to justice, national security, and other issues.
Anu Joshi is the Vice President of Policy at the New York Immigration Coalition. In her role Anu oversees the Coalition's work on immigrant integration and immigrant rights policy, as well as the Immigrant Services Support team. Anu has over a decade of experience fighting for immigrant rights, previously working with the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the Center for New Community. Anu is originally from California and has her Masters in Social Welfare from UC Berkeley.
