Please join us for black beyond’s debut IRL group exhibition, curated by JAZSALYN, Shameekia Shantel Johnson, and Yvonne Mpwo. Through new media, sculpture, performance, and conceptual art, the exhibition seeks to convene and alchemize a new being of blackness through the assembly of art as community practice and community activations.
a^3 = b^2
assembly, alchemy, ascension is to black beyond
The opening of Black Aliveness, or a Poetics of Being by Kevin Everod Quashie references an, “equation of blackness and death [as] indisputable and enduring, … but if we want to try to conceptualize aliveness, we have to begin somewhere else.”
Yet. This is not the end. Death and apocalypse generates a portal. An opening to new beginnings. A transcendental rebirth.
black beyond levitates black metatheories such as (afro) pessimism, nowism, afro vs afrifuturism, black womanism and beyond.
It is an attempt to map and puncture points of pressure thus subverting and unraveling a false, destructive reality. To escape and transmit outside and beyond the white racist imaginary. Beyond the present state of being confined in blackness. Beyond blackness as a technology of oppression and division.
This is not the end.
black beyond is unbounded. It is left open and undone. It seeks to convene and alchemize a new being of blackness through the assembly of art as community practice and community activations.
a^3 serves as a critical analysis of black metatheories and how they relate to each as a continuum of thought and practice. Rather than a question of can such metatheories coexist? Yet more so, how do they contradict, intersect and exist in a multidimensional state parallel to each other to; pushing us further outside and beyond?
This is not a drill. nor an equation, or a curatorial statement. This is a call to action!
a^3 asks,
what does the black beyond mean to you?
