Art forms have evolved and expanded dramatically since the industrial revolution. Since then, any rising art media has been debated over its relevance and hierarchy within the contained realm. At the same time, the abundance and democratization of the representations of artworks, such as pixelated images and commercialized merchandising, have altered the experience of consuming art. This abundance of representation creates confusion about the value of a work of art, especially in the case of a reproducible medium. What is the value and authenticity of art today?
"Authentic Reproduction" is a curated research exhibition that questions the ‘value’ of art and fashion pieces today. Bringing together eight alumni and students from Parsons Paris’ Fashion Design, Fashion Design MFA, Arts Media Technology and Fashion Studies MA, this exhibition proposes that “‘art’ itself is an open concept” and that it should welcome revolutionary change (“The Role of Theory in Aesthetics” in 1956 of an art philosopher Morris Weitz). As art practices evolve and art movements develop, ‘art’ can be identified, but cannot be defined. The ‘value’ in this context is not limited to mere monetary value but rather an ‘art value’; its inherent value, societal value and market value.
Artworks which utilize technology must not be devalued for their potential ease of reproduction. Just as paintings are sketched and sculptures are molded, clothes are patterned and digital arts are programmed. The artworks are displayed physically in the gallery for the audience to experience their authentic presence. Digitally created or printed, sketched or produced by the use of machinery, the art pieces presented by eight artists of Parsons Paris transmit the diverse and proficient modes of artistic expression of their generation.

Ryuku Otsuka is a Japanese artist and graphic designer. Graduated from Parsons Paris The New School in 2021, he majored in Art Media Technology department, gaining skills in 3D mock-up, graphic design, textile printing, technical drawing and photo rendering. Ryuku is a multi-platform designer with a professional experience in luxury fashion design, furniture design, art direction and visual art in Parisian institutions, working closely with Kenzo Takada and in the team of Louis Vuitton. His work contains various experimental projects using analog and digital methods that are carefully planned out in prior sketches in order to accentuate every detail and brushstrokes.
Oihana Lasa is a Spanish fashion and jewelry designer. Graduated from Parsons Paris The New School in 2021 in Fashion Design, she was selected to join the succeeding masters program to collaborate with Donatella Versace. Oihana is a multidisciplinary designer that searches femininity within menswear, finds inspiration from her cultural background and expresses her idea of beauty through her skills in outwear construction, draping, illustration and jewelry design. Her fluid, abstract and organic accessories designs contour and embarrass the body parts that have been worn.
Elena Marshall is an American fashion designer and photographer. Graduated from Parsons Paris The New School in 2022 in Fashion design, Elena designs garments that translate her devotion to sustainability, American culture and history. Elena was a Fashion Scholarship Fund recipient in 2022, for a case study envisioning the future of A.I. and Gucci’s e-commerce platform. Elena's work on photography goes back to her teenage years, where she used it as a medium to express herself and experiences she cherishes, such as falling in love, going on road trips, and working as a ranch hand.
Nour Takieddine is a Lebanese fashion designer. Currently a master student at Parsons Paris The New School, Nour was selected to collaborate and showcase in person her work inspired by Donatella Versace. As a winner of Elie Saab Prix du Jury in 2021, Nour distinguish herself as a designer producing wearable art and manipulator of fabric. Nour’s works on embroidery, heat pressed plastic bags and the use of extravagant colors showcase her idea of luxury and banality in her designs.
Heen Chiu is an American seamstress and a maker. Graduated from Parsons Paris The New School in Fashion Design in 2021, Heen is now a self sustaining freelance clothing designer in Portland, Oregon. Heen’s works reside in the fluidity of creating garments and furniture with an uninhibited approach, looking through its functionality and life necessity. Futuristic, flexible insite, planning and constant improvement are the key influences for Heen, whereby he declares to regain fashion’s functionality so that the future generations can live beyond what we have ever imagined.
Nicholas Evans is a 3D artist at Atelier Lorenzi. Born in the southern US and working in France after his education at Parsons Paris The New School AMT in 2020, Nicholas is an interdisciplinary artist specialized specifically in the realm of 3D. Most of his works center around his spiritual experiences such as his testimony as a Christian being like a video game full of levels that expound on biblical themes. On another note, Nicholas’s constant reflection of technology and its role in society is what he shows in the project Digital Z00.
Malin Mabika is an interaction designer from Zambia. Currently studying in Parsons Paris The New School in AMT, he has spent an exchange year at Parsons in New York in 2021-2022. With his knowledge in programming and drawing, he gained experience as visual artist and graphic designer at numerous workplaces in Paris, New York and Zambia. Malin experiments frequently with modern platforms, for example taking another artist’s 2D analogue painting and turning it into 3D.
Faith Kukla is an American fashion designer in Paris. Graduated from Fashion Design of Parsons Paris The New School in 2022, faith specializes in sustainable fashion design, specifically zero waste pattern design and the upcycling of textiles. Paired with her skills in complex draping, pattern making and textile manipulation, Faith reimagines women’s bodies and constraints through her liberating designs. In her thesis work, Faith has proposed garments that calculatively expose and hide beauties and insecurities of the bodies of aging women.
Ayaka Kitagawa is a Japanese fashion curator and heritage communicator. Graduated from MA Fashion Studies program at Parsons Paris The New School in 2022, Ayaka has worked in the archives department of Maison Margiela and Balenciaga, while sharing her thesis research on the display of conservation practices in the fashion museums in various conferences including the New Research in Dress History Conference with The Association of Dress Historians. Ayaka’s interest lies in the merging of art and fashion, the collision of heritage and innovation, and the enlarging power of an exhibition space.
