Ancient | Modern engages in a dialogue about the relevance and benefit of indigenous, vernacular, and often ancient knowledge, to further discussion and practice towards resilience and healthier environments in a warming world. We will look at case studies on tectonics, materiality, and ecologic adaptation in embracing greater environmental equilibrium.



The panel discussion will be moderated by Emily Moss, Director, BFA Architectural Design and Assistant Professor of Architecture and Interior Design, Parsons SCE; Martina Kohler, Associate Director of First Year, Parsons ADHT and Assistant Professor of Architecture and Design, Parsons SCE; and Allyson McDavid, Chair, ADHT Curriculum Committee and Assistant Professor of Ancient Material and Visual Culture, Parsons ADHT.

Leonardo Figueroa Helland is Associate Professor and Chair of Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management. Figueroa's work focuses on how indigenous and decolonizing approaches intersect with other transformative paradigms to address environmental challenges, climate crises and social injustices. He leads the Indigeneity and Sustainability section of the Tishman Environment and Design Center. Before coming to The New School, he chaired the Department of Politics, Justice & Global Studies at Westminster College (Salt Lake City, Utah), where he also taught in the MA in Community Leadership, the Environmental Studies program, and the Honors College. While at Westminster, he launched the Global Studies program and its annual conference on “Global Crises, Global Change”. His current projects include a manuscript on Indigeneity and Planetary Politics, an edited volume with Dr. Abigail Perez Aguilera on Indigenous Ecologies.

Jonsara Ruth is a design agitator for healthier futures. She is co-founder and Design Director of Healthy Materials Lab at Parsons School of Design where she is Associate Professor and Founding Director of the MFA Interior Design program. Jonsara is also a designer, artist and founder of Salty Labs, a collaborative design studio, established to improve human and environmental health through creating viscerally designed interiors, events, furniture and objects. As a designer, she has led creative and production teams to mass-produce the healthiest and environmentally friendly children’s furniture available in America, and she creates alluring and durable interiors with reused or biodegradable materials. Elevating everyday human experience is her underlying pursuit. 

 

Landscape designer and educator, Julia Watson is a leading expert on indigenous technologies. Her bestselling book with Taschen,
Lo-TEK: Design by Radical Indigenism has been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, Monocle, Architectural Digest, and more. Regularly teaching at Harvard and Columbia University, Julia’s studio work involves landscape and urban design, along with public speaking and consulting with brands on sustainability. In her studio, she collaborates with a horticulturist Watson Salembier, with a focus on rewilding and has just completed the summer gardens for Rockefeller Center using a native plant palette inspired by the American meadow. Julia has written for Topos, Landscape Architecture Frontier, ioARCH, Kerb, Water Urbanisms East and
co-authored A Spiritual Guide to Bali’s UNESCO World Heritage. She’s a 2020 TED speaker, and a fellow of Summit REALITY, Pop!tech, & The Christensen Fund. Born in Australia, she regularly treks across the globe.
