Professor Carlos Lopes will draw on his latest publication, The Self Deception Trap, which examines the complex relationship between Africa and Europe and how stigmatized narratives and substitute charity for economic transformation and development African leaders further these narratives in competing for external aid.
Carlos Lopes is a leading African intellectual and thinker on global economic issues. He is an Honorary Professor at the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance at the University of Cape Town and holds affiliate positions with Sciences Po in Paris, SOAS, Oxford University, and Cambridge University. He has served on several global policy commissions, advised governments, and held leadership positions at the UN, including as Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (2012-2016).
