The Institute for Critical Social Inquiry (ICSI) presents the 2021 Distinguished Public Lecture Series.
Afropessism is one of the leading paradigms of thought in contemporary Africa-American inquiry; in fact, it would appear that in its pervasiveness, it names and comprehends thought movements in this field that run at odds with its own assumptions; this lecture aims to advance a few beginning observations of this mode of interrogation in the interest of taking a systematic look at Afropessimism and some of its conceptual predecessors. Patricia J. Williams will serve as respondent.

Hortense Spillers is the Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor in the Department of English at Vanderbilt University. She is currently working on two big projects—the idea of Black culture and women and early Republican formations—and three smaller and related ones—Faulkner’s Thomas Sutpen (from Absalom, Absalom!) and the DuBoisian “double consciousness,” “statelessness” and the early modern Black subject, and Wright, Baldwin, and Ellison at mid-century; all of these projects are at various stages of writing.
Patricia J. Williams has served on the faculties of the University of Wisconsin School of Law, City University of New York Law School, and Golden Gate University School of Law. Williams was a fellow at the School of Criticism and Theory, Dartmouth College, as well as at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. Williams practiced as deputy city attorney for the Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney and as staff lawyer for the Western Center on Law and Poverty.
