St. Ann’s Warehouse presents Art as Activism at The New School’s Theresa Lang Center on April 24 at 6:30 pm. This free public panel, created in partnership with The New School, is led by award-winning verbatim theater artist Anna Deavere Smith. Art as Activism explores the making of Grenfell: in the words of survivors - in conversation with directors Phyllida Lloyd and Anthony Simpson-Pike, playwright Gillian Slovo, and Ed Daffarn - a Grenfell Tower survivor who contributed his true story to this play.
About the play and panel:
St. Ann’s Warehouse welcomes The National Theatre’s production of Grenfell: in the words of survivors, beginning April 13 and running through May 12. Grenfell is a verbatim play built from hundreds of hours of interviews conducted by playwright Gillian Slovo. It tells the story of the Grenfell Tower disaster of 2017, the most deadly residential fire that Britain had seen in three generations. Grenfell is not simply a memorial for the 72 lives lost to the fire. It is a testament to the Tower's residents, their demands for improved conditions prior to the fire, their heroism during the catastrophe, and their campaign to make this tragedy lead to accountability.
As The New York Times says, Grenfell is more than theater, it is a call for change. In that spirit, St. Ann’s Warehouse presents Art as Activism at The New School’s Theresa Lang Center on April 24 at 6:30 pm. This free public panel, created in partnership with The New School, is led by award-winning verbatim theater artist Anna Deavere Smith (Twilight: Los Angeles; Fires in the Mirror; Notes from the Field). Art as Activism explores the making of Grenfell: in the words of survivors in conversation with directors Phyllida Lloyd and Anthony Simpson-Pike, playwright Gillian Slovo, and Ed Daffarn, a Grenfell Tower survivor who contributed his true story to this play.
