This conversation with historian Jean-Paul Gaudillière will interrogate how global health has evolved as a field that is defined by philanthropy, public private partnerships, and donor-driven technical assistance. The COVID 19 pandemic has revealed how this field, while guided by expertise from Geneva and Seattle, has not taken into account public health models adopted by many Asian countries. By comparing experiences of countries in Asia, Africa, and Europe, the discussion hopes to put a critical lens on what regimes of global health have privileged – and systematically ignored.
Presented by India China Institute at The New School in partnership with the Julien J. Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs.

The India China Institute (ICI) is located within The New School, in New York City, where we have existed since 2005 as a hub of international scholarship, research, and public engagement on India, China and beyond.
Â
Our mission is to address issues of global concern through collaborative research and the formation of transnational networks of scholars and practitioners based in India, China, and elsewhere around the world. ICI is committed to studying global flows and frictions and helping direct these toward more sustainable and equitable outcomes. We believe that studying and thinking with the pasts and presents of India, China, and other countries in the global South can provide new frameworks that provide alternative perspectives to dominant understandings of global politics, culture, and design.
