Join us for a special in-person screening and discussion of the HARGROVE documentary.
HARGROVE chronicles the last year of trumpet legend Roy Hargrove’s life. We follow Roy as he embarks on what would be his final European summer tour. Music icons including Erykah Badu, Herbie Hancock, Questlove, Sonny Rollins, Wynton Marsalis and Yasiin Bey pay tribute to Hargrove’s artistry, impact and legacy. Told in vérité style, the film expands to explore questions of race and exploitation in the industry as well as the imagined barriers between genres of Black music. Filmed in Paris, Sète, Vienne, Perugia, Sorrento, Marseille, Los Angeles, Dallas and New York, this film features intimate interviews and stunning live performances by Roy in the last year of his life. A mystical journey through his last year on earth, HARGROVE is also a master class by Roy cementing his role as mentor to the next generation of young musicians.
The late Roy Hargrove was an alum of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.

The Arts Platform Fall 2022 theme is Staging a Revolution: Black Arts Now which explores the relationship between artistic expression, social justice, and politics during the contemporary Black arts movement that has exploded over the last decade. As such, we welcome presentations by artists, activists, curators, scholars, and other practitioners who are working toward and reimagining racial justice within the arts industries. While the course was born out of this boom in Black theater and arts, it is also interested in coalition-building across different identities and communities.

Eliane Henri, has a long-standing career in Hollywood starting as a Creative Director in the music industry working for her mentor Quincy Jones in the ’90s, moving into PR & Special Events as a Director at Harrison & Shriftman, a multi-national PR firm in the early aughts. In 2003 Eliane founded her own event production company, Poplife Productions, where she produced events and experiences for cultural icons including Forest Whitaker, Naomi Campbell, Mos Def, Stevie Wonder, Jay Z, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, and Yoko Ono. In 2013 Henri segued into documentary production, as a producer on the film Feel Rich: Health is the New Wealth, executive produced by her mentor Quincy Jones. Her unique access to Roy Hargrove, a very eccentric and elusive character, makes her a unique fit as director for this piece.
Dr. Renée T. White is the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at The New School in New York City, where she is also a professor of sociology with tenure at The New School for Social Research. With more than 25 years of experience working in higher education, Dr. White previously served as provost and a professor of sociology at Wheaton College in Massachusetts and as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Simmons University. She has also held a variety of faculty appointments, including professor of sociology and Black studies at Fairfield University, and a joint appointment in the Department of Sociology and the African American Studies Research Center at Purdue University. Dr. White is the editor of four books, including the acclaimed Spoils of War: Women of Color, Cultures, and Revolutions and the recently published Afrofuturism in Black Panther: Gender, Identity, and the Re-Making of Blackness and is the author of Putting Risk in Perspective: Black Teenage Lives in the Era of AIDS. She has served as editor of the Journal of HIV/AIDS Prevention in Children and Youth, and is a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Women and Gender in Higher Education. She serves as a Strategic Leader for VisionForward — a national coalition of organizations and individuals working to advance gender equity through women’s leadership.
